Astrology and the Human Preoccupation With Time

A very wise man once said, “To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.”

Time has been a preoccupation of humanity since the beginning. It is far more complex than mere physics would suggest. To be human is to search for meaning and time is intimately bound up in the meaning of our individual lives. There is a time to love but also to hate. There is a time to speak and a time to keep silent, a time to get and a time to lose. Can we recognize these times?

Astronomy as the Quantity of Time

In the modern world. time is perceived as linear. There is a beginning, a middle and an end. There is infancy, puberty, young adulthood, mature adulthood and old age in that order. But that may be because we have such a short lifespan that we are prevented from seeing a much bigger pattern.

While astrology and astronomy started off as the same science they diverged as time progressed. Quantifying time and space became the sole preoccupation of astronomers and astrology was dismissed as superstition. One might say that astronomers seek knowledge for humankind, while astrologers seek meaning for individual lives.

The amazing James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which only became fully operational in July 2022, has already provided data that is leading scientists to question some of their most cherished theories. These include the age of our Universe, how it formed, the standard model of cosmology involving dark energy and dark matter, and the speed with which galaxies arise.

The most fascinating thing about these high-tech space-based telescopes, including the beloved Hubble, is that they are not just looking through space. What they see in the far reaches may no longer exist or may not be in the place it looks to be from our perspective.

Telescopes like the JWST are actually looking back in time. They measure time, watch how it interacts with space and matter. We use the data to quantify the physical world. How long? How far? How old? How big or small? How weak or strong?

Time And Meaning

Most people are concerned with the quality of time rather more than its quantity. The average person does not care whether an asteroid is several hundred thousand or many millions of kilometers from Earth. They only want to know the probability of it hitting our planet within their lifetime. Numbers can tell us a great deal, but they are only a part of the world of meaning.

When will I be successful in my career? Will I recover from my current illness? What’s going on with our electricity supply and how will it affect my business? Will we have a better year this year financially? The numbers alone don’t tell us the full story.

Is this a good time for me to plant vegetables, harvest wheat, invest in a business, play the stock market, get married, go on holiday, or retire? Should I buy this car, this boat or this land? Will there be violence and unrest, or war, or legal changes that deprive me of my rights? What is the best time for my upcoming surgery? Ultimately the decision is always made by the individual, but an astrology reading may bring relevant considerations to awareness.

Time is relative and not only in the sense Einstein identified in his Special Theory of Relativity. Friday afternoons at work seem to take much longer for many than Saturday afternoons having fun. Time flies for busy adults but not for school children and prisoners.

Astrology As the Quality Of Time

Astrology shows time as cyclical. A cycle is not a perfect circle. It is a spiral. Spirals allow for development and growth. Every 12 years, Jupiter returns to the same place it occupied in your chart when you were born – for the rest of your life. You may be a different age and you may be in a different physical location, but the return occurs.

Jupiter has a specific symbolic meaning in astrology. It is not the planet’s size or its atmosphere we are thinking about. We don’t care because we don’t live there. We don’t worship Jupiter as a god. But the mythology we share indicates certain attributes or principles that Jupiter represents. Among other things, Jupiter symbolizes prosperity, power and abundance, generosity and fair dealing but for all this to be fully expressed, it must be well placed in the chart.

Signs and symbols are everywhere. Human language is full of metaphor. There is even a large branch of serious academic study devoted to signs and symbols called semiotics.

The dreaded Saturn Return takes roughly 29.5 years. Saturn is about boundaries, limitations and discipline. For many, its return represents hard lessons or the chickens coming home to roost because of previous life choices. Saturn is severe, austere, grave and patient. It is slow and withholding and emphasizes, conformity, structure, old age, time, hard work and study – if it is well placed. If not, it can signify malice, jealousy, ill will, fear, envy, malcontent, hardship and stubbornness.

Your Solar return is your birthday when the Sun returns to the place it occupied on the day you were born. Did you ever wonder why we wish “many happy returns” on a birthday? For Star Trek fans, it is the equivalent of the Vulcan salutation “live long and prosper”.

Astrology is a system of symbols that attributes meaning to these events. What is the quality of the time this year, this month, this week? The answer is derived from looking at the transiting planets of the time and their aspects to each other. The skill of an astrologer lies in interpreting this information.

Which issues will you be dealing with this year? Marriage, work, money, children? How do the planets align – or not? How will they present themselves in your unique life? Do you have an opportunity now to fix something you wouldn’t or couldn’t in the previous phase?

Is there something you need to learn or remember or understand about your life? Maybe you must revise previous life choices. What insights for the specific year ahead can a solar return reading offer you? Some say that the purpose of our lives is to learn certain lessons through experience. If we don’t learn our lessons the first time, they will be presented to us repeatedly in different ways.

People’s lives have a distinct theme that only becomes apparent over time. How do they handle success or failure? Do they learn to better control their emotions or their thoughts? How do they handle fear, injustice, wealth, poverty or relationships? Do they show courage and persistence in the face of adversity? Do they show leadership or generosity when times are hard?

The Example of the Lunar Nodes

The Lunar Nodes in a natal chart can indicate a particular theme for a life although most people are not even aware of their existence. The idea is to depart from our comfort zone in the South Node, which does not serve us, and head towards the North Node to grow.

For instance, someone with a South Node in Cancer and a North Node in Capricorn may need to become less clingy and emotional and more practical and independent in their outlook on life – but it can take a lifetime. A person with a South Node in Capricorn and a North Node in Cancer may need to become less egotistical or obsessed with rules and more in tune with their emotions and caring of others on an individual level.

The Virgo-Pisces nodal axis is concerned with matter and spirit and how we reconcile the two. We need to become aware of both our physical and spiritual identity and how to achieve a balance between them. Virgo is practical, concerned with the day-to-day and the best way to make things work perfectly. Pisces is a dreamer, concerned with higher spiritual truths and the interconnectedness of things. Pisces dissolves boundaries while Virgo, with its analytical tendencies, identifies or reinforces them – but both act with good intentions. Virgo can become too earthbound and detail oriented while Pisces can become ungrounded and needful of an anchor.

The Gemini-Sagittarius nodal axis involves the lower and higher mind. What is knowledge as opposed to wisdom? What higher truth is the data pointing to? What is the underlying connection between the various pieces of information gleaned by the Gemini mind? How does it translate into the bigger picture on the Sagittarius level? How does the bigger picture affect the details of a life? Does Sagittarius have all the knowledge necessary to develop an informed philosophy or world view?

These themes can manifest in an infinite variety of ways and life circumstances. It can be difficult to discern the pattern while we are in the thick of things. The astrological chart draws them into conscious awareness. It helps us understand the meaning of our individual lives and may even highlight the key lessons we are here to learn.
